THE ADIDAS SUPERSTAR
"With no shoe string in em?" Run DMC didn't deliver a generally applicable wearing manual. But Reverend Run, D.M.C and Jam Master Jay were responsible for the big push of the adidas Superstar's second career. The tracksuits. The sneakers worn without laces. The tongue that stands out. Plus a track of his own. What began in 1970 as a basketball shoe revolution used the second educational path for the metamorphosis into a streetwear and pop culture essential. The basic idea was as simple as it was effective. Canvas sneakers, especially the Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star, had served the NBA well for years. But now the players were looking for something new. They wanted more stability, more cushioning, so they initially switched to high-top models made of leather. What was missing was the flat-cut alternative. Enter the adidas Superstar. The first basketball shoe ever to combine a low-top silhouette with a leather upper, it also brought more stability and cushioning.
An offer the league's superstars couldn't refuse. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar celebrated his Skyhook in the new adidas creation. Jerry West, after all the template for the NBA logo, also donned the superstar ? and at one point even 75 percent of the league wore it. But every revolution mutates into normality at some point, and later into a relic. Progress. But it couldn't slow down the adidas Superstar. Instead, the sneaker changed direction. Run DMC brought it into pop culture, dedicated their track "My Adidas" to it, drove the metamorphosis forward and later even became the first music act to sign a deal with a sports brand. The adidas Superstar quickly cemented its status as an essential for the cultivated streetwear appearance. Pop culture had taken a liking to the adidas? character silhouette and took it on themselves. Missy Elliot created her own Superstar versions, as did Pharrell Williams. There were also collaborations with Prada and model Blondy McCoy, and Run DMC got their own adidas Superstar for the anniversary. The basic set-up comes with laces, of course.
FEATURES OF THE ADIDAS SUPERSTAR
Expressing character without turning up the volume too much is an art that hardly any sneaker masters in such a relaxed way as the Superstar. The three adidas stripes plus the Trefoil logo. The minimalist design in its original form doesn't need much more. Apart from this one detail that sets the Superstar apart from the crowd and also from the Stan Smith, which was released almost at the same time and is based on the same sole and heel construction: The thick rubber toecap, whose distinctive pattern earned the sneaker the moniker Shell Toe and is the starting point for the sneaker's clean leather upper. The low-cut is similarly essential to the silhouette. By the way, the high-top version of the Superstar is the adidas? Pro Model. Over the decades, new development stages, special editions and collaborations have been added again and again.
The Vintage, for example, has a slightly flatter and finer toe cap, while the adidas Superstar 1 resembles the model from the 80s that accompanied Run DMC to their shows. The adidas Superstar 80s, on the other hand, sits right between the other two versions. The WS1 and WS2 models again came out of an adidas internal design workshop and therefore offer new details that break up the clean design but never betray it. For women, there is also the reduced adidas Superstar Lite, which is so clean that it doesn't even need the three stripes on the side. On colder days, the women's world takes to its feet with the adidas Superstar Boot.

HOW CAN YOU COMBINE THE ADIDAS SUPERSTAR?
It doesn't have to be the tracksuit. It works too, but on the other hand the minimalism of the adidas Superstar is wasted if you don't make full use of it. Jeans. Monochrome jumper. A relaxed denim or bomber jacket. That's how quickly the outfit stands above the Superstar. In summer, a T-shirt or relaxed shirt is enough, possibly with shorts. Basically, thanks to its clean, unobtrusive look, the Superstar can be combined completely freely and thus once again underlines its status as a streetwear essential.
