For basketball? Did the Forum exist? On the tennis court? The Rod Laver Super walked around. For the run? Runners strapped the L.A. Trainer under their feet. And then in 1986, Run DMC also grabbed the adidas Superstar. A track of its own. Plus some of the most famous models in the brand's history. No one would turn away from the truth entirely if they were to be carried away by the claim that the 1980s were something like adidas' decade. Especially since the brand from Herzogenaurach also cultivated the art of discreet understatement despite all the spotlight. Based on its own tennis sneakers of the late 1970s - a Stan Smith as a father in spirit never hurts - a silhouette was created that relied entirely on the elegance of simplicity. Monochrome as a way of life. This is how the Continental entered the sneaker stage in the late 80s. All it brought with it was a red stripe that ran once across the outside. Narrow, of course. So adidas created a tennis sneaker in the best Stan Smith tradition, plus one that took a little inspiration from the famous fitness shoes of the '80s, at the same time the Reebok Club C. What today would pass for a concept for the ages nevertheless took a break after its first release. It wasn't until 2018 that adidas brought back the Contintental and gave the sneaker a little addition. Continental 80 - a reminiscence of the 1980s. A decade in which many things went in exactly the right direction for the company from Herzogenaurach.

A perhaps not only lucky coincidence facilitated the Continental 80's comeback. Shortly before its re-release, adidas had launched the Yeezy Calabasas Powerphase in collaboration with Kanye West. The Yeezy Calabasas Powerphase was actually inspired by the adidas Power Phase, but then it also kind of resembled the Continental. Doppelganger status. United in minimalism. Because like the Yeezy, the Continental 80 also stands out by not actively wanting to stand out at all. Understatement as a hype factor - and that in times of chunky silhouettes with a tendency to jump into the paint bucket. In its original form, the Continental 80 relies on a monochrome leather upper and a two-tone stripe on the side for visual appeal. The Trefoil logo takes over the branding twice. Discreetly, of course. It also has a monochrome rubber cupsole and an EVA midsole. So much for the basics. Because adidas keeps reinventing the Continental 80. Sometimes the brand adds straps to a women's model. Sometimes it takes inspiration from Japanese craftsmanship for the Continental 80 Baara and puts the sneaker on an outsole with a rough, eye-catching profile. In addition, there are new materials, for example nylon, and of course colourful colourways. In the Continental 80 Clean Classic, even the side stripe, which actually makes sense, disappears.
